AIRBUS

Toulouse is the home of Airbus headquarters, comprising many support and strategic functions and many Airbus divisions. It is the production location for numerous Airbus aircraft (including the A320, A350 XWB and A330), has facilities dedicated to cabin furnishing and painting, and is even home to the A380’s Final Assembly Line and flight preparation. Airbus has a wide range of activities in Toulouse: engineering (general design, systems and integration tests, definition of the structure and more), structural testing, materials processes development, systems organisation, flight tests, architecture and general design, integration tests and systems, propulsion, structural design and computation as well as aircraft painting and delivery.
At Airbus Defence and Space’s sites in Toulouse, employees work on space launch products, such as the Ariane 5, satellite manufacturing and satellite-based digital information gathering and analysis. Flight-testing for the A400M military transport and other military aircraft is often shared between Toulouse and flight test facilities in Spain.
Airbus CyberSecurity has also been developing its business in Toulouse since the beginning of 2017.

AEROSPACE VALLEY

Created in 2005, Aerospace Valley is the most significant innovation cluster in France in the fields of aeronautics, space and embedded systems, counting with over 869 members from both the industry and the academia. With offices in Toulouse (HQ) and Bordeaux, the innovation cluster covers the two geographically adjacent regions of South-Western France, Occitania and Nouvelle Aquitaine. With 124,000 industrial employees, Aerospace Valley represents around 1/3 of the French aerospace workforce. Similarly, 8,500 researchers and scientists are active within the Aerospace Valley territory, thus representing 45% of the French national R&D potential in the aerospace sector. As of June 2016, Aerospace Valley has obtained funding for 475 R&D projects representing an accumulated value of 1.2 billion Euro covering most scientific and technical fields related to the various sectors of aerospace. Within the framework of the general French “pôle de compétitivité” program, which aims to stimulate employment by fostering local and regional competencies in technical and economic areas, Aerospace Valley strives to create an ambitious 35-40,000 new jobs by the horizon year 2025.

AIRBUS

Located in the Montoir-de-Bretagne commune, the Saint-Nazaire site, which is certified in integration, assembles and equips the nose and centre fuselages for all Airbus aircraft. The site is indispensable as it then delivers the aircraft sections to all the final assembly lines by Beluga air transport, or by maritime, fluvial and then land transport for the A380.
Four assembly stages are carried out on the Saint-Nazaire site:
The assembly of the structure: Assembly of nose sections and nose and centre fuselages, assembly of doors, and installation of windows.
Painting: Application of water-repellent paints (which protect against water and humidity), anti-corrosive paints, and primers.
Equipment: Installation of systems vital to the aircraft: electrical wiring, pipes (air, hydraulic, water), air conditioning, insulation, blankets, and floor panels.
Tests: The equipment is tested before it leaves for the final assembly line.

This tour is unfortunately sold out.

AIRBUS

Mechanical machining of large elements is the oldest speciality at Nantes used in the manufacture of the A320, A380 and A400M centre wing boxes. Three families of aluminium and aluminium lithium parts are manufactured on five-axis high-speed NC machines according to their morphology and manufacturing process, requiring dedicated production lines before delivery to the assembly lines: forged parts, self-straightened, straight parts and formed flat parts.
Composite materials are used in the manufacture of radomes, A350 XWB, A380 and A400M centre wing box structural components, A350 XWB keel beams and air inlet acoustic panels. Three types of large composite parts according to their morphology and manufacturing process (monolithic prepreg draping, RTM or LRI injection) are produced: straight formed parts, flat and formed parts and RTM (resin transfer moulding) parts.

Since its creation in March 2012, Jules Verne Institute has been developing industrial research dedicated to advanced manufacturing technologies. Based in Nantes, France, and central to the Loire Valley’s economic strategies, Jules Verne Institute addresses mainly industrial, scientific and technological challenges that concern five strategic industries: aeronautics, shipbuilding, automotive, energy and advanced manufacturing equipment. It aims at becoming a reference in the field of advanced production for composite, metallic materials and hybrid structures parts, by providing solutions to the technological challenges faced by industrials, e.g. the design and implementation of advanced breakthrough technologies for manufacturing and production engineering. Jules Verne Institute brings together manufacturers, training facilities, private and public applied research laboratories, and prototyping and industrial demonstration resources. It focuses on strengthening the “industry-research-training” process in order to make the technological jumps that will help companies boosting their competitiveness and continuity.

THE INSTITUTE OF ADVANCED STUDIES, “IEA NANTES“

The establishment of IAS-Nantes was the result of the recommendation made in 2001 by the French ‘National Council for the Development of Human and Social Sciences’. The latter regretted that France lacked of institution such as the IAS in Princeton or Berlin, offering more than just accommodation for international researchers to foster the creation of strong research communities likely to renew existing networks and reinforce French academics’ involvement in international networks. As early as 2004, taking over these recommendations, Nantes Métropole committed to create such Institute and entrusted prof. Alain Supiot to realise this project. The academic policy of the IAS-Nantes is inspired by “first generation” IASs which have already proved their efficacy in the United States and in Northern Europe but is also influenced by the History of the city which invites to reassess the place and the status of labour, to establish a dialog between civilisations and to understand what makes them stand.
The goal of IAS-Nantes is to gather every year at the institute a small academic community composed of scholars with widely differing intellectual and cultural baggage but who share the same type of perplexity and whose projects have enough elements in common to trigger mutually beneficial dialogues. Living and working under the same roof for several months enables the residents of the Institute to confront the way they perceive specific issues. The epistemological premise of the Institute put into light a second aim of the scientific policy namely that it privileges research into the dogmatic underpinnings of human societies, that is, into what in the meaning which a society assigns to human life lies beyond proof.

CREATIVE DISTRICT, “QUARTIER DE LA CREATION“

Located on the western point of the island of Nantes, the creative district has the ambition to become the creative hub of the greater metropolitan area of Nantes. By 2020, the 15 ha that the district represents will intertwine start-ups, SME’s, research and development, higher education, and cultural organizations. The objectives are to develop 90 000 m² of activities and facilities (education, research, culture & leisure, economic activities); to unite over 4 000 students, of which 1 000 students enrolled in master’s degrees; to establish a research center for 100 researchers; to concentrate over 1 000 jobs (direct and indirect) in the creative sector.
In order to support and promote the creative and cultural industries, Nantes Metropole has given a mandate to the Samoa, the urban development agency of the Island of Nantes, to implement and manage the Creative Factory. Its main mission is to promote, support and develop the economic sectors of the creative and cultural industries through several aspects: to develop and manage office space destined for start-up’s, sme’s and any other type of entrepreneur in the sectors of the creative and cultural industries; to develop and implement a complete plan offering support to entrepreneurs at all stages of development of their organizations; to structure a support system geared towards the artistic and cultural sectors; to promote spill-over activities between industrial and service sectors and the creative sectors; to develop international cooperation between European clusters and hubs active in the field of the creative and cultural economic sectors

An Atlanpole representative will meet you in front of La Cité Nantes Congress Centre in the morning, accompany you on the tour and take you back to La Cité at the end of the visit.
The expenses for transportation during the tour will be covered by Atlanpole.
